Dunoon Goes POP, giving you a taste of the town

The People of Place (POP) in Valrose, at the top of Dunoon, made a short animation about their community with Dunoon Goes POP.

With the skilful guidance of model maker and animator Jim Parkyn and filmmaker Alasdair Satchel, the people of Valrose got their creative juices flowing during an animation workshop hosted by Dunoon Goes POP as part of the Dunoon Community Development Trust’s roadshow around the town in August

People of Valrose created characters, shared their stories and helped to craft a mini animation about their community as part of the workshop. You can see the animation board in the POP shop window, 28 Hillfoot Street and watch the film on YouTube.

“The people of Dunoon (POP), both past and present, inspire what we do at Dunoon Goes POP,” says Dunoon Goes POP co-founder Hannah Clinch. “We draw from our town’s fascinating heritage and learn from people today to share local stories through our drinks-making social enterprise.”

This event builds on our work at the Top Shop to create an accessible drinks garden that brings colour and flavour to the top of the town while providing nectar for our pollinating friends.

Thanks also to Argyll Community Housing Association and the wider community of Valrose. And thanks to the Valrose model makers Asiel, Charmaine, George, Maya, Sol and Zachary for taking part in the filmmaking workshop at Valrose.

A taste of the town

Dunoon Goes POP soft drinks are all named after various People of Place (POP) in the town’s history, including Robert Bryden, the architect of Dunoon Burgh Hall, George Stirling of Dunoon’s original soft drinks factory, and Margaret Parker, Argyll Street designer and dressmaker.

“Through Dunoon Goes POP, we're sharing the stories of the people of Dunoon with the people living here now,” says Hannah. “And we’re always keen to get to know the people of our town today.”

We've delved into the resources at Castle House Museum, taken a trip Kelvingrove Museum, delved into American Years Revisited research and spoken with local people about their memories and experiences. It's not just our town's social history that we’re interested in; it's also the people of the town today, who share their stories, help us craft our soft drinks and gardens, and get involved with our projects for the benefit of Dunoon.
